Talking SMSFs with Mirvac
Matthews Steer’s Head of Private Wealth Anthony Flapper and Self Managed Super Fund (SMSF) Manager Paul Zielke presented to Mirvac on SMSFs at Docklands in early April. The event attracted 50 attendees, some with established SMSFs, others considering SMSFs.
The first part of the presentation saw Paul Zielke simplify the technical aspects of SMSF operation and explain how Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangements (LRBAs) work, covering everything from explaining what an SMSF is, how it differs from other funds such as industry, retail and corporate funds, and why it may be preferable to these alternatives, to what’s involved in setting up an SMSF and how LRBAs are structured.
The presentation emphasised the importance of seeking expert help and guidance when formulating investment strategy, and looked at how to select trustees, the ongoing administration involved, and leveraging SMSFs to acquire property.
In the second part of the presentation Anthony Flapper explained the strategic considerations behind setting up a SMSF, highlighting the factors to consider, purpose of the investment strategy, risk profiles, and investment goals and objectives.
