Over 150 guests gathered at Hyatt Place Event Centre, Essendon Fields for our October 2025 Success Stories Breakfast, a morning full of insight, inspiration, and practical lessons on succession planning. The event was MC’d by Dougal Beatty and proudly sponsored by Cutter & Co Financial Services, Peloton Corporate, and Essendon Fields – three organisations supporting growth, innovation, and community.
Learning from a Family Business That Has Done It
Our featured guests for the morning was the dynamic panel from MPE Group – a family business that specialises in Commercial Fitouts, Electrical, Mechanical and Building Maintenance. GM Francis Mezzatesta and Founder Bernie Olanda were joined by Bernie’s three sons – Luke, Simon, and Peter Olanda (all Directors) to share the practical and personal realities of successfully exiting a business and passing on to the next generation.
The discussion offered a rare glimpse into the complexities of succession in a family business. The panel explored how to recognise the right time to hand over leadership, and how to structure the business to ensure clarity, stability, and continued growth. They spoke candidly about the emotional and practical challenges of letting go, reflecting on the mix of pride, uncertainty, and responsibility that comes with transitioning a business built over decades.
The panel also shared lessons on sustaining long-term success across generations, emphasising careful planning, open communication, and the value of external business advisors. The conversation highlighted that succession, while often confronting and sometimes uncomfortable, is essential for securing the future of both the business and the family.
“The emphasis on the ‘right fit’ for a role in business was imperative. Egos very often undermine a possible success story.”

Powerful Insights from Our Sponsors
The breakfast also featured insightful presentations from our sponsors. Chantal Cutter, founder of Cutter & Co Financial Services, shared a deeply personal story about overcoming cancer and the importance of planning – both for life and business. Her message was clear: having a plan in place protects yourself, your loved ones, and your business when the unexpected happens.
Michael Churchill from Peloton Corporate explained how business valuations underpin effective succession planning and broader strategic decisions. He highlighted that knowing your numbers, understanding your competitive position, anticipating market expectations, and considering the legal structure of your business are all critical to making informed decisions.
“Without knowing the numbers, it’s impossible to make truly informed choices.”

Celebrating Community & Inspiring the Next Generation
It was fantastic to welcome industry leaders such as Olivia Spalding from the Family Business Association, Annie Kessel from the Civil Contractors Federation and Brendan Pihan, CEO of Essendon Fields. Their presence underlined the importance of collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
We were also inspired by the VCE Accounting students from Ave Maria College and Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School, who engaged with our local business guests, asked thoughtful questions, and demonstrated genuine curiosity about business and succession planning.
“I really enjoyed the speakers’ stories. Very inspiring! The food was great, the venue beautiful, and the parking easy!”
