Matthews Steer Partner Adrian Misiano recently attended the Family Business Conference 2026 in Hobart, hosted by the Family Business Association (FBA). Bringing together family business leaders, advisors and decision-makers from across Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region, the conference focused on this year’s theme, Next is Now – exploring the decisions, conversations and strategies shaping the future of family businesses today.
A highlight of the conference was Adrian’s facilitation of Brydie Hull and Cathy Tobin of Tobin Brothers’ session, Thriving Across Generations. They explored the realities of navigating continuity, leadership transition and change within a multi-generational family business, drawing on lived experience rather than theory.
A key theme throughout the discussion was that the challenge for many family businesses is rarely ambition – it is achieving alignment across generations while preserving what has been built and evolving for what comes next. The conversation reinforced the importance of governance, documentation and clear structures, with the panel highlighting how investing in these foundations early can create longevity, support smoother transitions and reduce the need for significant change as the business grows.

The conference provided valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges facing family businesses, with strong discussion around succession planning, governance, leadership development and long-term stewardship. It was an excellent opportunity to connect with business leaders who are navigating many of the same issues and opportunities across generations.
Congratulations also to the recipients of the 2026 Family Business Excellence Awards, which recognise outstanding achievement, governance, entrepreneurship and stewardship across family businesses in Australia and New Zealand. Among the major winners recognised in Hobart were Tranzit Group, named both Family Business of the Year 2026 and Legacy Family Business Award winner, and GPSM, which received the Founder’s Family Business Award.
